1) How can I get a website on this server?
Fill out one of the applications listed on the District ITS Forms & Documents page (under Information Technology Services), depending on whether you are at a school, a district office or department, or an affiliated organization, get it signed by your Principal, Department Head or Administrator, and return to Webmaster, ITS, Room 105, Education Center.
Your application will be processed as soon as reasonably possible upon receipt. You need to provide the following:
(Please type or print clearly)
  • a signed Acceptable Use Policy which your Principal, Department Head or Administrator will keep on file at their office.
  • an email address -
this must be a working email address - if it is subsequently discovered that it is a non-working email address, your website will be removed from the server, and you will have to reapply and re-create whatever you've done. We do not check the addresses - what is on your application is what is input into the server software to create your site. The email address is used so that tech support can contact you, and for communication with the visitors to and members of your site.
If you don't have an email address, or would rather not use your personal one, you can sign up for a free email account from providers that give them (hotmail, yahoo, etc.) just for use with the website.
  • a login password of your choice -
should be four characters or longer. No spaces or punctuation please.
  • a name for your site's database -
this is what appears after the server's address (http://manila.pasadena.k12.ca.us/) for your site's homepage web address. No longer than 12 characters, and no spaces or punctuation please (CapitalizedWordsTogether is the generally preferred style on the web). It should preferably relate to your site so surfers can easily remember it.
Initially, your site will be given this as the site name, but you can change the site's name under preferences. Database names are given on a first-come first-served basis; if your requested name is already taken or is too long, a close approximation will be used, if possible.
As an example, this site's database is named 'ServerInfo', and is accessed by 'http://manila.pasadena.k12.ca.us/ServerInfo/' but the site's name has been changed to 'Manila Server Information', which appears above.
When your application information is processed, the server software will email you confirmation. Your site will automatically be added to the list on this site. 2) I'm an Editor and I Can't see changes when I post them.
Make sure your Browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer) is not caching pages.
If hitting 'Refresh' or 'Reload' brings up the changes, your browser is caching. Be sure your Browser cache settings are 'check every time' rather than 'once per session'.
In Internet Explorer, the settings are usually in the 'Tools' menu, the last entry 'Internet Options...' For caching, you should be on the 'General' tab, and press the 'Settings' Button in the section marked 'Temporary Internet files'.
For Netscape, go to 'Preferences' under the 'Edit' menu. Open up the 'Advanced' section on the left by clicking on the box next to the word Advanced. Select the word 'Cache'.

If you are on a machine on the district network, make sure your Proxy settings are correct and enabled. This is very important. Prior to April 2001, internet filtering was required by Board and District Policy. Now, in addition to those policies, Federal Law requires that we have internet filtering in place under the new "Children's Internet Protection Act." Failure to do so puts our federal funds at risk. If your machine was setup by ITS or DSC personnel, they should have made these settings for you. If you've setup your machine yourself, please be sure that they are correct. If you have any problems setting these yourself, contact your Site Technology Leader, DSC, or ITS for assistance.
Random sweeps of the Server Logs are made to see if anyone isn't proxied, and failure to do so can cause you to lose your internet access privileges for violating your signed Acceptable Use Agreement. Proxy Server Address: 156.3.72.4
    The port should be 3128
    Under 'Exceptions', add manila.pasadena.k12.ca.us
For Netscape, go to the Preferences as described as in question 2 above, and click on 'Proxies' instead of 'Cache'. The button for "Manual Proxy Configuration' should be selected. Use the 'View...' button to check your settings.
For Internet Explorer, go to 'Internet Options' as in question 2 above, and select the 'Connections' panel. Click on the 'LAN Settings' Button, and be sure 'Use Proxy Server' is checked, then click 'Advanced Settings' and make sure your settings match the ones in the illustration provided.

Be sure you are entering your email in all lowercase. Be sure you're entering the email address you submitted on your application, or the one you joined the site with, if the Managing Editor has made you an editor on the site. Be sure you are entering your password correctly - (if you're the Managing Editor, it was emailed to you when your site was created. ) Passwords are case sensitive. Be sure your browser is accepting cookies. Logging In or Out sets and clears a cookie on your browser. 4b) I can log in, but when I go to preferences, I get this message:
Sorry! There was an error: Can't display this page because you do not have enough access privileges.
You aren't logged in correctly. Since Preferences are critical to the operation of your site, there is an extra security script that checks your password for an exact match. If your password is 'Password' and you've logged in with 'password', you will get the editor's menu, but when you select Prefs the above error message appears.
